About the Big Island

The east side of the Big Island of Hawaii is the only affordable part of the Hawaiian Islands anymore. Its still possible to find a decent home here for under $250,000 (although its getting harder and harder to do), and land can go for as low as $20,000 an acre.

The Big Island is an amazing place of climatic, cultural and botanic diversity. Only on this one island can you find 11 out of 13 of the planet's climatic types. Only here can you go from desert to rainforest in the span of a few miles.

If you're looking to find a place, you can start by seeing some information about the subdivisions in the Puna district. And since most of our subdivisions in Puna do not have access to county water, you may want to review our page on catchment.

And let's not forget our great goddess Pele and her ongoing efforts to make the island larger. We do have active volcanos on this island and one thing you need to consider is the lava zone (and I don't mean the bar in Pahoa).
